Don’t waste your downtime: Improve your business process and put systems in place

If you’ve ever thought about upgrading your construction project management or improving your systems and processes – but you had too much work on, no spare time on your hands or your resources were too stretched – then now is the time to do it.

Like many industries around the world, the Australian construction industry has slowed. Projects have been put on hold and we’re spending less time on job sites. But that doesn’t mean you can’t move your business forward. If you’re suddenly facing some unexpected downtime, improving your systems and processes will help stabilise your business.

Whether you’re a builder, manufacturer or speciality trade – the best way to protect your business is by making it stronger. By investing in your business now you’ll be ready to hit the ground running when life returns to normal.

Be proactive, not reactive

Time is our most valuable resource. And upgrading your systems and processes takes time.

First, there’s the time it takes to find the right platform for your business. Then there’s the implementation process. Then finally the time it takes to train staff properly and get their buy-in so they actually use it. No matter how easy or seamless the onboarding process is, all of this means disrupting your regular operations.

That’s why it makes sense to start preparing for the eventual upswing now. If the current world events mean you’re facing an unexpected pause in operations, use it to get your systems and processes sorted.

Will you be ready to jump back into business?

If there are any weaknesses in your business they’re probably beginning to surface. This can be worrying but it will also give you a good idea of what can be done better, faster or more efficiently.

Although it’s understandable to want to batten down and cut costs, it’s important to remember the current climate won’t last forever. If you can focus on getting your systems and processes in order now, you’ll be in a more solid position when the business world reawakens.

Some questions worth considering:

  • Could better technology help reduce your manual labour and overhead costs?
  • Would an updated project management process help you reduce operational costs and improve project outcomes?
  • Would an updated system allow you to better track your team’s efficiency so you can increase productivity and take on more jobs?
  • Could a better tender management process help you win more work?
